We are at a turning point in the history of youth extracurricular actions, where being active and socializing with other peers outside of the internet, “social networks” and school of course is becoming a priority and not just an alternative.

This past couple of months, starting with production of “Nyack Needs a Skatepark” documentary, mark the beginning of a journey Machete Media Productions is taking to understand “the need for outdoor space” more specifically skate parks in towns like Nyack or Stony Point. We’ve kept one eye on the “Nyack Needs A Skatepark” movement for some time, but it’s been clearly heating up since the benefit Misfits concert. I’ll have a separate post devoted to the design meeting that happened couple of weeks ago in Nyack.

On Sunday August 3rd, skateboarding sports enthusiasts this time at Stony Point have joined Machete Media Productions on the set of a short PSA video about “why they want a skate park built in Stony Point.” The push for a "plan" is backed by PAL- Stony Point Police Athletic League, a group in charge of all fundraising toward the construction of the Stony Point Skate Park since the Town of Stony Point, just like in Nyack, will not finance the project. The town is providing land at Vincent Clark Park.

Youth today faces countless of choices of how to spend their free time. Too many kids in our towns nowadays pick minor crimes, drugs and other damaging actions. Most often, these children make these choices basically because they lack positive alternatives. PAL provides an encouraging and beneficial setting through sports for the youngsters to develop and grow. So for the skate park they have raised just over $15,000 through local fundraising efforts and donations. While they are grateful for these donations they still need more to make this a reality. Once the PAL elects a wished for design for the project they will become eligible for numerous grants.

It’s been fun getting to know the local kids who came out and showed us couple of tricks on their skateboards. This is a truly gifted young community of skateboarders who has helped to create an awesome video and just like in Nyack the skate park is something long desired by Stony Point community.
